Review Viva Mandela:1990. 120 minutes stereo. Canon Collins Educational Trust for South Africa. Produced by Robert Lemkin, Paul Snell, Shaun Fenton and Jane Stylianou SYNOPSIS The history of apartheid from 1918 to February 11, 1990, when Mandela was released. Narration is by President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia. The video uses documentary footage backgrounded by music and appearances by over thirty musical artists. In contrast to other films/videos featuring mostly international musicians, this one features the following South African groups: Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela, Johnny Clegg and Savuka, Malapoets, the SWAPO Cultural group, amongst others. Bob Marley, Latin Quarter and Black Uhuru are some of the non-South African groups featured. The video contains scenes of important events: volunteers during the Defiance Campaign of 1952, and the indelible image of a youth and a girl running with the lifeless body of a young child shot by police bullets. This image recurs with the equally tragic news photograph of Hector Peterson on June 16, 1976.

Review Eyes on the Prize (PBS Mini Series Boxed Set) / Pbs Home Video:Eyes on the Prize, the most comprehensive television documentary on the American civil rights movement ever produced, includes rare film footage and incisive present-day interviews to bring the events of this period to life. Two events of the mid-'50s propel the movement into the headlines: the Mississippi lynching of 14-year-old Emmett Till, and the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, inspired by Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat to a white man. Walk with hundreds of thousands of protesters to the triumphant 1963 March on Washington. By the mid-'60s, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. confronts the powerful political machinery of Chicago's Mayer Richard Daley. As America enters the turbulent '70s, African Americans begin celebrating their own culture. One of the essential documentary series from 20th-century television, Eyes on the Prize is an extraordinary, grassroots history of the civil rights movement in 1950s and '60s America. Leaving punditry and debate to others, this six-hour program concerns itself with the individuals who were there, who participated on the front lines, who witnessed and survived to tell about the crusade's tragedies and victories. Starting with a pair of mid-'50s heroic actions in the South that helped galvanize black and white activism against institutional racism (actions that included Rosa Parks's refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama), the series winds its way through the exponential growth of the movement to the passage of the Voting Rights Act and beyond. [+]
The epochal battle between states-rights advocates and federal authorities is well-covered, as are the many sacrifices made and enormous risks taken by Mississippi Freedom Riders and advocates of black voter registration. Also in this boxed set is the series' sequel, Eyes on the Prize II: America at the Racial Crossroads 1965-mid 1980s. An equally stirring, eight-hour history of the post-civil-rights years, in which hard-won political power manifested itself both inside and outside elected government offices, this follow-up traces the fracturing of a unified civil rights community into numerous missions and agendas. Driven by interviews and archival footage, the series takes a clear look at such historical chapters as the rise of black separatism, the election of Carl Stokes to Cleveland's Office of the Mayor, and the turmoil of school desegregation. Both the original series and sequel are an absolute must for a contemporary understanding of racism in America. -Tom Keogh.

Review Held in Trust: The Story of Lt. Henry O Flipper / PBS Home Video:Powerful dramatic recreations and archival photography tell this story of Lt. Henry Flipper, the first black graduate from West Point Military Academy. Shortly after his first assignment, Flipper fell victim to racial prejudice; he was dishonorably discharged from the Army after being framed on a trumped-up charge of embezzlement. General Colin Powell introduces this tribute to Lt. Flipper and his triumphant struggle to vindicate his name. As the first black man to graduate from the U. S. Military Academy, Henry Ossian Flipper faced institutional racism on a daily basis, but once he was assigned as an officer to the 10th Cavalry, a regiment of the legendary "Buffalo Soldiers" of the Old West, he thought he could happily live his lifelong dream of being an Army officer. But in this innovative video, which is based on a one-man, one-act play, the viewer meets an elderly Henry Flipper, who recounts the story of how his military career came to a tragic end when he was falsely accused of embezzlement and was court-martialed at a frontier military post. As portrayed by actor George Robert Snead, Flipper is unbowed as he relates his fate and tells the story of how racial prejudice probably doomed his military career. [+]
Interwoven with this engaging dramatic presentation is historical narration, provided by actor Ossie Davis, that fills in the details of Flipper's unfortunate career. The video, which begins with an introduction by General Colin Powell and ends with the account of how Flipper's name was eventually cleared 40 years after his death, is both entertaining and enlightening, an evocative look at a little-known yet resonant episode in American history. -Robert J. McNamara.
