Review Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu Vol.2 (Tsunami) / Tsunami Productions:

This video program presents the first ten kata of the Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu karate syllabus up to Naihanchi Sandan performed by the present headmaster Takayoshi Nagamine 9th Dan, assisted by senior instructors Yasuhiro Makishi 9th Dan, and Taira 8th Dan. Each kata is performed at full speed and shown in slow motion; the most important technical points are then explained by Nagamine sensei, and the applications of fundamental techniques demonstrated by the three instructors. Key issues discussed include the development of explosive striking power, the most vulnerable targets to attack, and the differences between applications as they are performed in the kata, and their use in realistic self defense situations. Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu karate is based in part upon the fundamental teachings of Choki Motobu, Chotoku Kyan and other legendary Okinawan karate pioneers. The genius of the Founder, Shoshin Nagamine, was in drawing together the most refined elements of each school and creating from them his own unique style of Shorin Ryu karate. Contents: Fukyu Kata 1 and 2 Pinan Kata 1-5 Naihanchi Kata 1-3.

Review Shotokan Karate Advanced Training V.3 (Tsunami) / Dragon Associates Inc.:

These brand new videos by renowned karate instructor and historian Harry Cook are packed with information you will find nowhere else. Harry is best known as the author of Shotokan Karate: A Precise History, widely regarded as the most important book of its type ever published, and the knowledge gained from the three decades of research and training that produced this volume, is also very evident in these professionally produced training videos. In these fascinating programs the author shows how karate was transformed from an effective martial art to little more than a gymnastic performance in less than a lifetime, and demonstrates the robust pre-war karate of the original Shotokan training hall in Tokyo's Toshima-ku district first opened by Gichin Funakoshi in 1939.

Review Under Siege 2: Dark Territory" (in Spanish) / Warner Home Video:

The success ofUnder Siege made a sequel mandatory according to Hollywood's rules of maximum revenue, and as sequels go, this one's not half bad. Steven Seagal returns as former Navy SEAL and skilled chef Casey Ryback, who's trying to spend quality time with his niece on a cross-country train trip. But as luck and action-movie formulas would have it, the train has been hijacked by a demented genius (Eric Bogosian) who is using the train as a moving platform to seize computerized control of a top-secret U. S. satellite that is capable of causing earthquakes from space. Seagal has to stop the train or the villain (whichever comes first), and the action is fast and furious on its way to a high-speed climax. He's not as wacky as Tommy Lee Jones in the first Under Siege, but Bogosian has got a delirious quality that serves the comic-book plot, and action fans get more than their fill of dazzling stunts and special effects. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Black Mask 2: City of Masks (Spanish) / Sony Pictures:

This outlandish comic book of a movie stars newcomer Andy On as the genetically altered warrior played by Jet Li in the original Black Mask. As Zeus-the gigantic brain-in-a-vat that created Black Mask-sends his newest super-warrior to track Black Mask down, the nefarious owner of a professional wrestling network has a plan to genetically alter his wrestlers and turn them into animalistic half-humans-meanwhile, Black Mask falls in love with a beautiful geneticist who's paralyzed with phobic anxiety whenever a man touches her. None of the plot makes much sense, but sense is hardly the point. Though the computer-generated special effects are fairly crude, the relentless camera movement and rapid-fire editing of Hong Kong action master Tsui Hark (Peking Opera Blues, Time and Tide) and fight choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix) keep the spectacle rolling along entertainingly. Also featuring Traci Lords as a kick-ass wrestling queen. -Bret Fetzer.

Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu karate as formulated by its Founder, Shoshin Nagamine from the teachings of Matsers Chotoku Kyan and Choki Motobu has traditionally ben preserved and disseminated by means of its eighteen kata or formal exercises. This has ensured uniformly high standards of performance within the Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu movement, as well as continuity of techniques and training methods from instructor to student, generation to generation. This video program includes eight of the advanced kata of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu, as well as the Yakusoku Kumite or two man sparring exercises. The entire presentation is performed by the son of the Founder and current headmaster of the style, Takayoshi Nagamine 9th Dan, assisted by senior instructors Makishi 9th Dan and Taira 8th Dan. To facilitate learning, the kata are performed in slow motion and at full speed with mulitple views shown where deemed necessary in the interests of clarity. Additionally, applications and the explanation of key points are given by Nagamine Sensei in person. Contents: Ananku, Wankan, Wanshu, Passai, Gojushiho, Chinto, Kusanku, Yakusoku Kumite. Review Goju Ryu Technical Series 6 (Tsunami) / Tsunami Productions:

Filmed entirely on location in a beautiful Japanese garden this is the sixth and final part of the Goju Ryu karate Technical Series of videos featuring the world's leading exponent of the style, Morio Higaonna, 9th Dan, Hanshi. It is a fitting conclusion to a post-graduate level instructional course that is regarded as the finest ever made on the subject, and that is also as the best selling in seventeen countries in Europe, the Far East, and Australasia. Sanseru is a trade mark kata of Goju Ryu, and no one performs it better. The author also demonstrates in great detail the significance of the movements, how they are used (bunkai) and the training exercises that develop the ability to apply these powerful techniques dynamically (kakie). A beautifully produced and immensely useful learning tool that is in a class of its own.

Review The Karate of Choki Motobu (Tsunami) / Tsunami Productions:

Choki Motobu • 1871-1944 Probably the event most responsible for the worldwide popularity of karate is Master Choki Motobu's defeat of a Western boxer in 1925. Initially ridiculed by the audience at an “all-comers” prizefight in Kyoto, Japan, laughter turned to stunned silence when the middle-aged and rather portly Okinawan karate man knocked his strongly built young opponent unconscious within seconds. Karate became an overnight sensation, and the mainland Japanese embraced the art as their own. So spectacular it was featured in "Kingu", Japan's most popular magazine of the era, the victory sadly did little for Motobu personally. Illustrations used in the magazine implied the victor was Gichin Funakoshi, a man inferior in both social status and fighting ability to Motobu, infuriating the latter, and ensuring instant fame for Funakoshi who went on to found the Shotokan style of karate and become a karate legend. Nonetheless, Motobu's technical influence on karate was immense. His students included Shoshin Nagamine (Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu), Yasuhiro Konishi (Shindo Jinen Ryu) and Hironori Otsuka (Wado Ryu), all of whom formed their own karate styles based, in part, on his teachings. On the death of Choki Motobu in 1944 his unique form of karate seemed destined for extinction. Few members of his original Daidokan Dojo survived the war, and so little was known of Motobu sensei's private life that most were unaware of his son Chosei who was destined to carry his father's style into the twenty first century.

Review Functional Karate by Takayuki Kubota / Tsunami Productions:

Author Takayuki Kubota is a veteran of police departments on both sides of the Pacific, a former diplomatic bodyguard, instructor to the FBI and DEA as well as other less public government departments. He is credited with the development of the side-handled police baton and the Kubotan® keychain as well as a host of restraint, handcuffing, and fingerprinting techniques that are approved for use by police forces across the U. S. His aptly named, professionally produced new program is packed with the practical techniques that have made him a legend in law-enforcement and karate circles. It is fast moving, easy to follow, visually appealing and shows very graphically the extent of his mastery of timing, fighting distance, and joint manipulation. Kubota sensei demonstrates the brutally effective control, restraint, and defensive techniques that are his forté, and he does so in great detail. With a partner he first breaks down the technique into a logical sequence. Then he performs it smoothly as a single movement, and then at full speed as his extensive experience dictates it would happen "on the street. The techniques he shows are practical responses to armed and unarmed attacks and include counters, blocks, throws, locks, choke-holds, take-downs and combinations of the above. They are by necessity brutal: there are no second chances in Kubota's world; multi-faceted: keep attacking any way you can until you win, and conservative: don't give your opponent a chance to respond.
