Review Aida's Brothers & Sisters: Black Voices in Opera [VHS] / Kultur Video:This is both a documentary and a performance tape, with many excerpted vocal numbers and a multifaceted discussion of the belated but successful participation of African American singers in opera. Topics discussed: Is there such a thing as the "black voice," recognizable without seeing the singer? Is Porgy and Bess truly a "black opera"? Do black women fare better in opera because, unlike black men, they are not perceived as threatening? Do black baritones have better operatic prospects than black tenors because tenors usually get the romantic roles? Is the Metropolitan Opera using fewer black singers today than it did in the 1960s? What is being done to develop young black singers? The tape raises more questions than it answers and would be useful for launching group discussions. The performances include glimpses of Shirley Verrett in a seductive aria from Samson et Dalila, Leontyne Price in an excerpt from Der Freischutz, Jessye Norman in music from Ariadne auf Naxos. Some of the best musical moments are not strictly operatic-for example, Paul Robeson at a concert in Moscow singing "Old Man River" with some of the words changed to fit his own agenda. Marian Anderson has a monumental stature and makes several appearances: singing Schubert's "Ave Maria" in the tape's most beautiful segment, singing at John F. Kennedy's inauguration, and, in her most famous concert, singing to an audience of 75,000 at the Lincoln Memorial after she had been excluded from Constitution Hall. -Joe McLellan.

Review Ye Tang - The Peony Pavilion / Lincoln Center, Festival d'Automne [VHS] / Image Entertainment:At the center of the exquisite Chinese opera The Peony Pavilion is a romantic and poetic love story about a couple who encounter many obstacles, including parental opposition, invading Mongol hordes, and bungling comic servants. Intimate episodes alternate with elaborate set pieces, lyrical poetry with low slapstick comedy. This abridged version of the epic masterpiece from sixteenth-century dramatist Tang Xianzu is an all-embracing art form. Acting, singing, dance, acrobatics, stilt-walking, puppetry, recitation, pageantry, and martial arts all find a place in the rich tapestry of The Peony Pavilion. 120 minutes. This production of the epic Chinese opera The Peony Pavilion was a smash hit at New York's Lincoln Center Festival in 2000; at 19 hours long, however, it resists being released on video in its entirety. But this two-hour distillation (with narration by Robert Powell that bridges the gaps necessitated by such abridgment) is more than satisfactory, giving viewers a sense of the shape and the flow of the entire work. It also shows off this staging's sensationally colorful costumes and sets, along with the talented cast of actors and musicians, all under the direction of Chen Shi-Zheng, who brings off a near-miraculous dramatic and musical event. While the cumulative impact of such a lengthy dramatic work is inevitably lost, this string of "highlights" still manages the remarkable feat of developing both a narrative and characters worth spending time with. -Kevin Filipski.
