A sprawling mixture of mythical crises and slushy teenage romance, Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play has the scale, but not the depth, of an epic. Like the heroine of Sailor Moon, Miaka is a ditzy 15-year-old girl who's crazy about junk food and boys. She and her scholarly friend Yui find an ancient Chinese volume, The Universe of the Four Gods, about a girl "who made her dreams come true after she came to possess the seven stars of Suzaku," and are literally drawn into the book. Miaka is hailed as the girl from another world destined to become the priestess of Suzaku, the protecting deity of the Empire of Konan. She soon finds herself caught in a web of adventures, magic, deadly perils, intrigue, and counterintrigue. Miaka gains the affection of the seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku: martial artist Tamahome; the exquisite emperor of Konan, Hotohori; the transvestite Nuriko; sorcerer-in-training Chichiri; mountain bandit Tasuki; physician Mitsukake; and the flute-playing Chiriko. The Warriors and the Priestess are all needed to summon Suzaku to save Konan from an invasion from the rival kingdom of Kutuo. Complicating matters are Yui's estrangement from Miaka and their rivalry for the dashing Tamahome. The animation is extremely limited, even by anime standards: director Hajime Kamegaki often uses pans over comic book-style artwork in place of character movements. But the adventures are enjoyable and the side characters are often engaging, especially Chichiri. [+]
The weakest aspect of the series is Miaka, who comes across as a whiny twit: Tamahome and Hotohori fall in love with her, but it's difficult to understand why. Mysterious Play began as a girl's manga, then became a weekly TV program. It's more entertaining to watch one or two episodes at a time: after too many at one sitting, the story begins to feel repetitious and padded. This four-disc set includes only the first half of the story (the TV series' entire first season), ending on a real cliffhanger. The supplemental material offers a well-organized chart of the characters and their relationships, keyed to scenes in the story. -Charles Solomon Miaka, a high school student in Tokyo, has normal problems: fights with her mom, entrance exams, and deciding where she's going to go eat with her friends. Then she finds a mysterious book, the Universe of the Four Gods, in the library, and her life is changed forever when she is transported into the book.

Review The Dog of Flanders - Subtitled in English / Geneon [Pioneer]:

Ouida's Flemish classic children's novel of the late 1800s gets a slightly more unusual treatment here than in the 1999 live-action release. Originally a 1975 Japanese series called Furandaasu No Inu, The Dog of Flanders, set in 19th-century Belgium, is in the original Japanese with English subtitles. While the packaging proclaims it appropriate for ages 3 and up, it's best for older children, unless they can read English or understand Japanese. The subject matter-which covers death, despair, and unresolved disappointment-may be difficult for sensitive viewers. The story follows the adventures of artist Nello, a young peasant boy separated from his closest companion, wealthy Aloise. Nello only has his beloved grandfather and his faithful dog Patrasche, but his grandfather dies suddenly. Nello must fend for himself. Dog and boy master brave a frightful snowstorm, at the end of which Nello is finally able to view the work of his idol, Reubens. The ending, while grim, switches to the future with a grown Aloise (now a nun), and it's clear Nello's spirit lives through his still-devoted friend. A wonderfully animated film for the viewer who has the maturity to understand its deeply powerful story. [+]

Toriyasu is a lazy, ordinary 10-year-old boy, who wearily endures the outbursts of his boisterous younger sister, Meeko. When his dog Papadoll turns up missing, Meeko is sure the pet has been abducted by aliens. Her suspicions prove correct, as the children find themselves being not kidnapped but "escorted" by three talking cats to Banipal Witt, a feline world that exists in another dimension. Papadoll was brought there by the nasty Princess Buburina: exposure to its magical sun has turned the hapless pooch into a bizarre, destructive monster. (Banipal Witt's sun also turns Toriyasu and Meeko into kittens. ) Saving the cat kingdom, Papadoll, and themselves pits the children and their allies against Buburina and her henchcats in a wild air battle. Anime fans will be surprised to learn that this gentle, brightly colored fantasy was written and directed by Takashi Nakamura, the animation director of Akira, with a screenplay by Chiaki Konaka (Lain). Art director Shinji Kumara makes Banipal Witt a dazzling fantasyland of brilliant colors, balloons, and cat-shaped buildings that combines elements of Yellow Submarine, Ub Iwerks's Pincushion Man, and an amusement park. Youngsters will relish the antics of Mimiko, a Japanese girl with as much spunk as another animated favorite, the little French mademoiselle, Madeline. Lighthearted and cross-cultural, this Japanese cartoon, made popular for American audiences through English dubbing, is based on Panda koPanda ("Panda, Little Panda"), the 1972-73 two-parter written by anime master Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro). Isao Takahata, another anime king (Grave of the Fireflies), directs the production, showcasing some characteristic elements of anime that surpass usual Saturday morning fare: crisp animation, depth of characters, and sophisticated musical tracks. Cinematography aside, viewers will be captivated by the optimistic orphan who lives with her grandmother and has no fear of "burglars, ghosts, or any old thing. " In the first story, "Panda Family," Grandmother must travel to Nagasaki and, reluctantly, leaves Mimiko at home alone. To Mimiko's delight, she is not alone after all when a father and son set of panda bears moves in. Unaware they are zoo escapees, Mimiko adopts Papa Panda and little Panny and writes to grandmother, "I've got myself a daddy and a baby. " Rapid-fire adventures begin for the trio, yet Mimiko keeps her cool whether dealing with Panny's mischief, zookeepers' threats, or a close call with a raging waterfall. High-flying fun continues in the second tale, "The Circus in the Rain," as a baby tiger escapes the Big Top to join Mimiko's menagerie, a monsoon floods her home, and a runaway train spells disaster. All in a day's work for this daring do-gooder; Grandmother would be proud. [+]

The members of the "Holy Student Council" are charged with keeping them in line and fending off hostile entities. A disgruntled former student steals 1,000 statues, hoping to absorb their mental powers-but is sidetracked by Kazumi's girlie magazine. Although Haruto ends each episode sighing, "Oh my God!" the characters actually enjoy their unconventional lives. [+]
