Review The Monkees - Our Favorite Episodes (in Metal Lunchbox) / Rhino / Wea:Whether you're indulging nostalgia or experiencing the Monkees for the first time, Our Favorite Episodes-chosen by Davey Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith-is a curious time capsule. Even for veteran Monkeephiles, it's obvious that the TV series, totaling 58 episodes from 1966 to 1968, hasn't aged very gracefully. It's fun as a pop-cultural artifact, and original fans will fondly recall the eagerness with which each week's episode was anticipated. Looking back, however, the shows are marginally amusing, and their improvisational, low-budget strategy tends to limit their lasting appeal. For die-hard fans it won't matter a bit; any chance to own and archive the Monkee phenomenon (with brief latter-day interviews included) is going to be welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed. Because Jones's favorite episode was actually the Emmy-winning "Royal Flush," the inclusion of "Hitting the High Seas" is a conspicuous blunder, but it's compensated by Peter's "Monkee vs. Machine. " Directed by series producer (and then-budding filmmaker) Bob Rafelson, and featuring comedian Stan Freberg as a stodgy toy-company executive, this early episode was a first-season highlight. Mickey selected (and directed) the series finale, "Mijacogeo (The Frodis Caper)," which is noteworthy for a filmed performance of Tim Buckley singing a rare acoustic version of "Siren Song" (further proof that the Monkees were hipper than their TV personas). Mike's favorite "Fairy Tale" is a wild romp indeed, with Nesmith in drag (as a fairy princess), sounding shockingly like Cher from her later TV variety show. [+]
They're semi-inspired at best, but these vintage episodes still capture the lunacy that accompanied the meteoric success of the "Pre-Fab Four. " -Jeff Shannon.

Review A Touch of Frost - Season 2 / Mpi Home Video:A Touch of Frost is one of Britain's most successful detective series and stars award-winning actor David Jason as Detective Inspector Jack Frost, a policeman with a knack for attracting trouble. Set in the dreary town of Denton, Frost approaches each case with his characteristic dry wit and a sense of moral justice. A Touch of Frost Season 2 includes: "A Minority of One" - Frost and a black detective constable investigate residents at the Eastdean Estates housing project, where young, black men have been accused of a string of commercial burglaries. Frost feels responsible when an informant is murdered. The informant's child is kidnapped and Frost embarks on a one-man rescue mission. "Widows and Orphans" - Frost is reluctant to investigate a rash of break-ins at the homes of elderly citizens due to lack of evidence until an elderly woman is found badly beaten. A new female partner dispenses free advice on Jack's love life and he asks Shirley Fisher to dinner. "Nothing to Hide" - Frost gets a new partner whose attitude problem stems from a recent demotion. Is a drug addict's death accidental - or is it murder? Frost deals with personal issues involving an old flame. "Stranger in the House" - A serial rapist is on the loose in Denton. [+]
A teenaged girl is missing and Frost fears she may be the next victim. The investigation becomes jeopardized when Frost finds a possible connection with the victim's father. Under pressure to remove himself from the case, he uses WPC Hazel Wallace to bait the rapist, placing her in grave danger. Review Hullabaloo 5-8 / Mpi Home Video:Spanning 14 months from February 1965 to early April 1966, this second DVD compilation of the short-lived NBC pop-music series Hullabaloo is fascinating more as an ethereal glimpse of mid-'60s pop trends than a record of enduring music. The majority of these performers (Chad & Jeremy, Leslie Gore, Barry McGuire) were enjoying their relatively brief time in the spotlight, so they're little more than time-capsule curiosities to anyone born after these shows were originally broadcast. The format was so safely mainstream that one "Top Pop" medley segment features guest host Peter Noone (from Herman's Hermits) singing Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street," with predictably ludicrous results. But the menu of then-current chart-toppers also includes a generous sampling of the British Invasion (the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, and even Marianne Faithful, with several London-scene reports from Beatles manager Brian Epstein), and bonus track highlights include the Zombies, Junior Walker & the All-Stars, and the Supremes at the start of their meteoric rise. Although many of these acts lip-sync to canned music (you'll notice a lot of unplugged guitars), the sound quality surpasses the video, which was mastered from salvaged black & white kinescopes (sadly, the color videos were destroyed). In addition to the hit-or-miss music menu, the Hullabaloo dancers and popular guests hosts provide a welcomed trip down memory lane, especially when David McCallum ("Ilya Kuryakin" from TV's The Man from U. N. C. L. E. [+]
) struggles through several attempts at spy-thriller sketch comedy. Hullabaloo is a refreshing reminder that television in the mid-1960s had yet to lose its innocence to the turmoil of years to come. -Jeff Shannon.
